—Movements for a Solo Demonstration, 2020
HD Video, colour, no sound, 6’54’’. Colour Photographs
Movements for a Solo Demonstration (Movimientos para una manifestación en solitario) reflects about the solitude experienced by those who choose to dissent from the lifestyle of the majority and addresses the need to defend freedom of choice and to transform the limited regime of affections in which we are commonly forced to move.
The video features a body that becomes a demonstration in themself, a rebellious body that questions identity norms through movement, attitude, and a way of being that vindicates themself politically. The body is alone but empowered in the awareness that their presence is a transformative presence, whose distance from gender binarism gives them strength while being the cause of their social marginalization. The performer holds a banner that is usually present in the exhibition format of the project. The banner quotes a slightly altered well-known sentence by Baruch Spinoza: ‘What the body can do’ (that becomes here ‘What a Body Can Do’). The fragmented sentence has opened the door to the philosophical sustenance of affect theory.
